Why I love to Hunt

April 29, 2008 by Tom Sorenson

I know I’ve visited this topic before, but I just ran across a very good article that points out that when we outline why we love hunting, it can help us create talking points that form our argument for hunting. So, here is my attempt at listing, very simply, the reasons I hunt. (In no particular order)

1. Serenity and adrenaline all in one. Hunting (and fishing, for that matter) is one of the few things I can think of that is so peaceful that I can really take time to feel quiet, relaxed, and at complete peace, and the next moment can feel so tensed, excited, and shot full of adrenaline.

2. Landscape. Whether I’m hunting in the rugged mountains or the dry desert, the scenery where animals roam is often stunning and even breathtaking. The beauty and vast expanse of the land that surrounds us reminds us how tiny we are in the grand scheme of things.

3. It’s hard. Maybe it makes sense to you and maybe it doesn’t. It makes sense to me. I love the challenge that hunting brings. To try and match wits with big game animals is intriguing and helps me understand the critters better. I like trying to understand why animals behave the way they do.

4. Camaraderie. To share a trip with a close friend or a special family member and share stories and good times is special. I harvested my first deer with my grandpa and my first elk with my dad. The deer was a 2 x 3 and the elk was a spike, but these are my two favorite hunts because I was with people who are special to me.

5. Wild meat. Wild game is the best tasting meat there is, in my opinion. I love beef, but given the choice between a choice cut of beef and a juicy tenderloin elk steak - I’ll take the elk.

6. Respect. Hunting gives a hunter respect for many things. Respect for animals, respect for mother nature and its awesome power, respect for other people, respect for life, respect for death, respect for weapons. I’m sure there are others, but you get my point.

7. Sights. I’ve seen things while hunting I would never see anywhere else. In mother nature, in animal behavior; there are many things I’ve had the privilege of witnessing only because I was hunting.

I know there are more out there that I’ve read even, but I couldn’t find them again! I’ll keep searching and adding - in the meantime - if you read this and you’ve got a post on this topic not on the list - let me know! This is all great reading.

Hi Tom, first of all thank you for the link to my blog.

This is a great post you wrote and I agree with you that it is a good way to share with non-hunters what hunting is all about for each individual hunter.

As I read all the posts on the different blogs about this subject one thing became obvious. While each hunter seems to have a slightly different reason one thing we all have in common. Enjoying the closeness of nature in all its breathtaking beauty. Understanding our place in it and gaining more respect because of it.

I have been reading your blog on and off and have to say that I am very impressed with what you did with it. I would like to link our blogs together if you’re agreeable to that.
