Good to be back home!
by: Tom Sorenson
As you’ve noticed, I’ve been gone for almost a week – and being home has felt oh-so-good! I wanted to thank those of you who stuck with the blog through my absence. On my trip to Utah, I made two acquaintances that I’m very excited about.
When I was cruising through the remote desert of Southern Idaho, and I was getting very bored and tired of driving through nothingness, I turned off the freeway to the small town of Hagerman. There, I met with Cory Glauner of gothunts.com. My first shock was the valley leading to Hagerman – as the freeway cuts through the (in my opinion) ugliest part of Idaho, the valley leading to Hagerman was very interesting and dare I say – pretty! The green valley also held one of the strangest sights I’ve seen when we drove by a field where a big wheel line was watering a large field of boulders. There was a little bit of grass, but let me stress - a teeny tiny little bit of grass – as the field was basically a field of huge rocks being watered very graciously.
The meeting with Cory went very well, and I was introduced to a very cool idea – check out his site for the details. I’m very excited for the possibility to work with Cory in the future.
My next meeting took place in American Forks, Utah. After attending to other matters, I was able to meet with Kent Roberts of Inventive Technology on Monday. On a winter mule deer hunt in Idaho this past season, Kent stopped by our camp and talked to my mom and dad and grandpa. My brother and I were out hunting, so I missed meeting him, then. I was able to have him give me a run down of the awesome products he has created and manufactured for archery hunting – and have been intrigued to the point of severely wanting to try his products out.
We (my wife and I) returned home yesterday, and I was glad to be back in the land of modern technology. I did not miss the computer while on the road, but since being back, I’m glad to have it, again! First thing I did upon returning is check on the controlled hunt results for Oregon. I’m lucky to go three for three this year! I got my bear tag this spring (and because of weather, only hunted one day) but also successfully drew an archery antelope tag (the odds were pretty fair) and a rifle tag for mule deer – which, because of preference points, was a near given – but I’m always in doubt till I know for sure! This will be the first time I’ve hunted big game (other than my one day of bear) with my rifle since 2004 when I was fortunate enough to take both a deer and an elk. The freezer has been pretty bare in the intervening years as my skills with bow and arrow are being honed! Hopefully, this year there will be meat for the winter!

Tom,
Can’t wait to work with you… and by the way, I appreciate the kind words about my little town of Hagerman. I’m pretty fond of it. However, I do know what you mean about the rock watering guy… kind of weird.
Welcome back!
Good to see you back… I could not imagine driving through barren areas such as Souther Idaho… I just absolutely need mountains and trees and lakes… I would slowly go insane!
It’s amazing how we depend on our computers and other pieces of technology until we actually walk away from them for a few days…. but at this point, I’d really like to get away from them… I’m up to my neck in paperwork and crap so a week or two out at my favorite stream doing some flyfishing without technology would be ideal!
