Hunting and Marriage
After reading this funny post from The Hunter’s Wife, I was reminded of a story I heard about a family friend. I’m not sure how he ever dated his wife without her knowing that he was a hunter, or perhaps she just thought that once they got married he would stop hunting -
As it’s bound to do, Fall rolled around during their first year of marriage. He started packing his bags and all his camping equipment when his wife asked, “Umm, just where are you going?”
“Hunting,” he said very matter-of-factly, “it’s hunting season, and that’s what you do during hunting season.”
“Every year?” She asked.
“Yup.”
“Oh.”
“You can come along or not, it doesn’t matter to me, but I’m going hunting.”
I wonder how many marriages start off this way?! And how many of said marriages continue for very long? This man and his wife have been married almost 40 years – and he still hunts, and she still doesn’t want any smelly animals in the house!

I never realized how important hunting was to my hunter until after we were married. I have reluctantly allowed smelly animals to be mounted in my house.
I wonder if my husband knows how lucky he is that I ended up enjoying hunting?
I know I’m lucky that my wife enjoys hunting and completely understands it.
I thank my lucky stars everyday.
