Jennifer Metzker – Family & the Outdoors

by:

I had a visit with Jennifer Metzker – pro staffer for Women Gone hunting – and the privilege of listening to others that have such a passion for the outdoors is one I’m beginning to really and truly enjoy. She mentions the joy it is of hunting with her husband and children, and in my opinion, that is what it is all about.

Here are some tales she told me:

My husband was the one that really got me hooked on hunting. Dad used to just hand me a gun and say, ‘alright, go sit there.’ And when I got married, I was showing horses and he was hunting and he said, ‘Hon, you gotta come do this.’ And I said, ‘Y’know, I’ve done it before and it’s not that great.’ He said, “You gotta come, let me show ya…’ and I did, and I was hooked, and I sold my horse and I’ve been doin’ it ever since with him and my sons!

One year, my husband took me out to the woods with him – I’d gone about three years without shooting anything, and he always shot a deer! So, he said ‘We’re just gonna go out and sit up against this tree on the ground back to back.’ So we got set up and pretty soon, he was watching a deer come up to him, and I was watching a deer come towards me. We were facing different directions and I said, ‘Hon, he’s comin’ for me.’

He kept getting closer and closer and my husband would say, ‘Just wait, just wait – relax, it’ll be okay -’

What I didn’t realize is that he was waiting for the doe on the other side of the tree to get close enough to him and he wanted to do a double. So then he said, ‘Go ahead and get your gun up.’

So I pulled my gun up real easy, and I got my gun up – and I shot! My husband almost had his gun up when I shot and his deer ran off! He laughed about it, but I told him, I said, ‘You’re gonna have to tell me what you want.’

Another time, I got to go out with my youngest son and he called turkeys for me this last spring. My husband took our oldest striper fishing and I told Boone ‘Let’s just go turkey huntin’.’

He loves turkey hunting, but he’d never actually gotten to call in the field. We got up early and got up on the mountain and he was directing me, ‘okay, sit here..’ and I let him do whatever he needed to do and he started calling and sure enough he called in one jake and one longbeard and we got busted both times, but just the fact that my fourteen year old boy called in two turkeys for me was just awesome! I’ll never forget that. I have so many good memories hunting with my son…just a few years ago I took him with me on a deer hunt in South Carolina – I had this little honey hole I used to go to. We were sitting in the woods and looked down the mountain and there were some deer down there and they were coming up and he whispered, ‘Mom! Mom – there’s some deer!’ They were behind us, so we turned around, and these deer were really close and one walked right up to him, put his nose on his bot, and snorted at him, and ran off! And when he did that, he blew snot all over my son! It was really cool – it was scary when it happened, but it was cool afterwards. I’ve had a lot of good memories in the woods hunting and I don’t think I’ve had a bad moment. It’s the best sport out there if you ask me!

Getting snotted on by a deer. Now that is priceless.

Jennifer made me think if I had sons I would have to go hunting to enjoy their experience. :)
