Is the Steelhead a Myth?
by: Tom Sorenson
I wanted to take a moment again and push the Base Camp Legends Forum into the spotlight. Head on over and check out what’s going on over there. If you want to participate, you can log in using the same login info as you use for the main Base Camp Legends site – or if you’re a new user, you can sign up here.
As far as I can tell, we have a debate going on as to the reality of the steelhead – seems that some folks think the biased left wing media has created the myth of the steelhead as some sort of creature to stir up false hope in the heart of good, hard working Americans.
Or, you can chime in on the Spider Bull that was killed this year by Denny Austed in Utah. I know there are some folks that don’t like the idea that the bull was killed by an auction tag holder – and others are perfectly fine with everything that went down with that bull.
Benji recently started a thread for people to share the memory of their first fish – and the rules state you can only pick ONE FISH. That’s a tough one. Head on over and let us know about your one most memorable fish.
Of course, if you want to brag up on your own success this year or complain about how rotten your luck has been, you can tell us how your season is going – and even include a link to your site or to a picture.
Of course, we have to revisit the coolest thing that’s happened this year in the world of hunting. I dare anyone to dispute it!
If you’ve got some outdoor related humor to lay on us, we’ve got that covered, too. Come on over and introduce yourself and join us in getting this forum running – we hope you feel at home here and feel free to put your feet up – this is Base Camp!
And in closing, I have some pictures from the old days of the alleged “steelhead.” These are courteousy of Robert Millage from the blog, Idaho Outdoors. I’m afraid he doesn’t believe the steelhead to be a mythical creature – I’ll leave it open for debate, but I’m pretty sure they don’t exist. I’ve sure never caught one.
Thanks to Robert for the use of these awesome photos – and check out his site if you want to see some more awesome photography and great story telling – he’s even got some current photos of some giant steelhead fish.
I believe the man in each of these photos is Bob Taylor.

My father has actually caught the elusive steelhead several times. They make good eating!
I’ve caught the elusive steelhead as well. They last awesome, and they are an absolute blast to catch.
Hmm. Well, Kristine and Arthur, I suspect you both to be honest people…but I still have my doubt about this here “steelhead” creature.
Seriously, I’ve been trying to hook one for several years with no luck, but I haven’t hit it real hard. I’m hoping to this year. Everyone I talk to says what awesome fighters they are and I want to feel it for myself!
No steelhead this far south so we don’t have to fight about them… instead we wonder if the stories about 200 pound catfish living at the bottom of the river are true
Accidentally posted that comment under Suzee’s username.
Anyways – I’ll work hard at finding me a steelie this winter.
