Spring
by: Tom Sorenson
Spring announced its presence earlier than usual to us Idaho valley dwellers, thus prolonging the anticipation for spring bear and turkey hunts. My brother, Todd, had drawn a spring bear tag two years running, so we figured he was an easy one to count out this year for draws, but mom and I both drew tags and will be trying our luck for spring black bears beginning the first weekend of April. Naturally we’re very excited, and we look to get back into the swing of things as far as videoing our hunts. Last year we took some steps back in that department as camera issues plagued us much of the year, although Mom and Dad were still able to capture some great footage.
This spring bear hunt is an intense hunt that is quickly growing on me. Partly because it’s the first hunt after a long winter of restlessness and watching snow fall, and partly because it takes place in the mountains when the snow caps the peaks and the wildflowers shower the hillsides, this hunt is one I look forward to with great anticipation each year. With this particular draw unit, dogs and bait are prohibited, meaning the hunt will be spot & stalk hunting from the ground – eyeball to eyeball combat with a truly amazing critter in the black bear. They’re somewhat of a ghost-like creature in the way they move so silently, and their powerful noses make stalking difficult. However, their seemingly poor eyesight means with the wind in the right direction, a bow hunt may be in order. In reality, I believe I’ll pack my rifle on my back and carry my bow – and let the situation dictate my weapon. To the rest of you chasing black bears or turkeys this spring, good luck and remember to enjoy the signs of life that appear all around you.

Good luck getting after them Black Bears. Spring means turkey hunting for me – it’s way too hard to draw a black bear tag around here – so I’ll be chasing a longbeard while you guys are chasing a blackie.
It would be very cool to arrow one. I hope that is how it goes.
Spring has come early here too. April 1 black bear season opens, there are so many that we can kill two of them. April 15 turkey hunting season opens. Between those two dates I am busy doing seminars with barely any time left to scout.
Wish you the best of luck in the upcoming spring season.

Hope you have a great hunt Tom. I’ll be chasing turkeys, like Art, but using a bow, at least for the first two days. After that the shotgun comes out. Can’t wait to hear about your hunt.
